When Foxie’s mom and dad told her it was her bedtime, she was not very happy about that. Foxie had been having trouble sleeping in her own bed because she was getting scared at night. In the pitch black darkness with the crickets outside the window, Foxie just knew that there had to be monsters living under her bed. So, every night for the last week Foxie had gone and crawled into bed with her parents.
As much as Foxie’s mom and dad loved her, they wanted her to be able to sleep all on her own. So, Foxie’s mom bought Foxie a lime green night light - her favorite color. At bedtime, Foxie’s mom went and plugged the night light into the wall. Foxie was still nervous, but agreed to at least try to lay down in her bed in exchange for a bedtime story. So, Foxie’s mom began telling a wild, made-up story to Foxie who drifted off to sleep quickly.
At some point in the night, however, Foxie woke up. She heard her dog snoring in the hallway, wind blowing tree branches outside the window, and a sound that was like a low hum. She thought the low hum was a growl from a monster. She looked around, which was a little easier with the night light, and didn’t see any monsters. Still nervous, she ran to her parents room anyway.
“Mom,” Foxie whispered, “There’s a monster under my bed, I’m for sure this time, I heard it!”
“Foxie, what did you hear?” Foxie’s mom asked.
“I heard a low humming noise,” Foxie responded, anxiously.
With a small groan, Foxie’s mom got out of bed and followed Foxie to her room. Foxie’s room, which happened to be adjacent to the kitchen, was practically silent to Foxie’s mom’s ears. Then, she heard the hum.
Foxie’s mom chuckled slightly and said, “Foxie, that’s just the refrigerator. But, I’ll check under the bed for you if that will make you feel better.”
Foxie nodded and her mom checked under the bed and she then said, “the coast is clear, no monsters under the bed!”
“Thank’s, mom,” Foxie said with a smile, hugging her mom tightly.
“Now, be a big girl and sleep in your bed all the rest of the night,” encouraged Foxie’s mom.
Foxie really did want to be a big girl. And now that her mom had clarified what that noise was for her, she was ready to go back to sleep and feel happy and safe.
Sometimes things can be scary, but with a little help from others and a lot of confidence in ourselves, Foxie knew she could do anything - even sleep alone in her bed.
